Requirements To Become A Virginia Notary Public - New/Renewing Application Process

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must be able to read and write English
• Have no felony convictions in the Commonwealth or United States unless pardoned and rights have been restored
• Non-residents of Virginia may be appointed if they are regularly employed in Virginia and perform notary services in connection with their employment
• No US Citizenship requirement for a Virginia Notary
• No recommendation process

  

Fees Associated With Notary Application Process

• $45.00 application fee
• $10.00 Oath of Office / Commission fee

Terms of Office - Important Guidelines For Virginia Notaries

• Term:  4 years expiring last day of notary's birth month
• Jurisdiction:  At-large; performing all notarial acts anywhere within the Commonwealth.  Limited powers if out of state on documents recorded in Virginia.
• Seal:  Required-must be sharp, legible, permanent and photographically reproducible
• Journal:  Not required
